USBC Sets New Requirements for Coaching Certification

Date Posted: December 2nd, 2019

USBC Coaching Certification and Development would like to make you aware of changes regarding the status of USBC coaching certifications. As many of you know, a Federal law was passed requiring National Governing Bodies to implement SafeSport Training, and SafeSport Training now is a mandatory part of the Registered Volunteer Program (RVP).

Volunteers always have been, and always will be, the backbone of the United States Bowling Congress. They are dedicated, hardworking, unselfish people who have the sport's best interests at heart. The specific roles or positions within USBC that require RVP compliance are:

USBC Headquarters employees
USBC National Board and Youth Committee members
USBC Team USA and Junior Team USA Members
State and Local Youth Committee members and directors
State and Local Association Board members
State and Local Association Managers
USBC Youth league officers
USBC Youth tournament managers
USBC Certified Coaches
Requirements to be an “active” USBC certified coach

It is mandatory for anyone 18 years of age or older who has regular contact or authority over USBC Youth members, and those individuals within USBC governance structure, to be a Registered Volunteer.

RVP is a requirement for certified coaches, and they must comply with the following:

-- Be a USBC member in good standing - membership is required for all Registered Volunteers as we only have jurisdiction amongst our members. In order to enforce the policies within the RVP Handbook and the U.S. Center for SafeSport, all our Registered Volunteers must be members. We cannot tell anyone who is not a USBC member what they can and cannot do, nor would we be able to enforce any sort of disciplinary action for individuals who are not USBC members, should a policy be broken.
-- Complete the U.S. Center for SafeSport training
-- Pass a background screen through the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI)
-- Report any child abuse, including sexual abuse, to the U.S. Center for SafeSport and USBC. (USBC RVP Handbook page 11)
-- Adhere to the USBC Registered Volunteer Prevention Policies (USBC RVP Handbook page 6)
-- Adhere to the USBC Registered Volunteer Code of Conduct (USBC RVP Handbook page 12)

In January of 2020, certified coaches who are not in compliance with any of the above requirements will become inactive and be removed from Find-A-Coach on BOWL.com.

New certification test requirements

After attending a conference, tests must be completed one year from the test enrollment date. If you do not complete the test in that time frame, you may contact coaching@bowl.com to request re-enrollment; this may be done in one-year increments as long as you are eligible (includes current USBC membership and RVP compliant). If at any time significant updates have been instituted to the program (as determined by USBC Coaching), you will be required to re-attend a conference (at a reduced rate) and must pass the test.

USBC Coaching thanks you for all you do. We appreciate all the hard work you put into coaching bowlers and helping them to improve.

Sincerely,

USBC Coaching Certification and Development
